The world’s number one cereal crop with over 1.2 billion t of harvest a year.
Over 60% of it is fed to farm animals.
About 15% serves as food for humans - either directly or as a valuable raw material for the food industry.
More than 780 million t are harvested worldwide every year. This makes wheat the second most commonly grown grain.
As one of the most ancient crops of mankind, it was already collected and cultivated more than 8000 years ago.
Today the versatile grain is a very important staple food and the most popular grain for bread making flour.
Over 150 million t are harvested annually and globally. Most of it is used to feed animals.
About 10% is processed into malt to produce beer, malt coffee and whisky. Yet barley is not only a popular basis for stimulant beverages but also for an all-round and healthy human diet.
Fun fact: Because of its relatively constant size, the barleycorn was a reference for many old measuring units of weight and length.
For once, we stop counting beans here:
As a nitrogen collecting legume, the plant is particularly valuable for healthy soils and helps to save resources thanks to the reduced need of fertilizer.
The affordable and nutritious protein source for humans and animals alike also serves as a basis for sustainable and future-proof food production.
